Bacterial DNA Testing by PCR
Bacterial DNA testing using PCR is a great way to reduce inappropriate antibiotic use while increasing our ability to treat bacteria and fungus in the wound appropriately without contributing to the multi-drug resistant organism (MDRO) problem. The accuracy of PCR testing is much more advanced than traditional cultures, ensuring someone with a chronic wound can eliminate infections in the wound, allowing wounds to heal.
Skin substitutes, also known as CTPs (Cellular and/or Tissue Products) are skin replacements that may be temporary or permanent. Skin substitutes may be from a xenograft, allograft, autologous, or bio-engineered. These skin replacements help speed up wound healing, cover the wound, or stimulate the body's natural cells to encourage wound healing. Often skin substitutes (CTPs) are covered by insurance if medical necessity is met and other standards of care have been implemented for a certain length of time.
Biopsy
A biopsy is a sample of tissue or cells removed from the skin in order for a pathologist to examine it more closely. Our Advanced Wound Specialists may perform a biopsy if they suspect various conditions such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, or even Merkel cell cancer. A biopsy can also reveal other conditions such as vasculitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, or other autoimmune disorders.
Removal of non-viable tissue is crucial to ensure wound healing. Non-viable tissue like slough or eschar can allow bacteria to grow and delays wound healing. Removal of this unhealthy tissue allows new healthy tissue to form and ensures bacteria doesn't have a place to grow.
This therapeutic technique (NPWT) allows suction via a tube connected to a dressing to remove exudate and promote healing in a variety of wounds while maintaining moist wound healing principles. This controlled application allows negative pressure inside the wound to assist with wound contraction and removal of excess drainage to promote wound healing.
